Abstract
The decline of growth hormone (GH) production with advancing age may contribute to the decrease in bone mass and density, lean body mass and muscle mass and the increase in adipose tissue that occur with aging. Growth hormone as a therapeutic
agent
has
been used in GH-deficient children from the late 1950s and recently in adult patients with GH-deficient. These study disclosed beneficial effects of growth hormone on the metabolism and the nutrient utilization. Growth hormone treatment altered
body
composition and lead to improve exercise caspacity.
To study the effect of growth hormone on body composition and metabolic action on healthy older female, six-month treatment of growth hormone were done. During the treatment 30 women received 0.03 mg of biosynthetic huma growth hormone (LBD-003)
per
kilogram of body weight subcutaneously three times a week, and 10 received no treatment as control. We measured body weight, biochemical parameter, GH, osteocalcine, IGF-I, lean body mass, percent fat mass, bone mineral density and psychological
well-being.
During growth hormone receiving, subjective feeling of increased energy was noted. The GH and IGF-I were increased during growth hormone treatment but serum osteocalcine was not significantly change by treatment The administration of growth
hormone
for
six month accompanied by 2.51% increase in average lumbar vertebral density as contrarily to decrease bone mieral density in control. There was no significant in the bone density of the total body, leg and arm. In growth hormone treated group
total
body fat percent was decrease and lean body mass was increase without significant change of body weight. There was no significant side effcct to growth hormone treatment. The growth hormone treatment of healthy older female was benefit on body
composition change and improvement of well-being. (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 7:352~357, 1992).
